They say, “There are no atheists in foxholes,” but it would probably be more accurate to say, “In foxholes even the atheists pray.” This morning we will reflect on prayer in the
broadest possible sense of the word with special attention to what might be considered the
answer to a humanist’s prayer. Chris Buice served as student minister of HUUC from 1995
to 1998 when he was studying at the Earlham School of Religion, Society of Friends
(Quakers). He was ordained by this congregation at Kumler Chapel, and is currently
serving as minister of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where his office
is full of turtle figurines people have given him after he taught them the HUUC cheer, “Go,
Turtles, Go!”
